~High Rigg~

22nd September 2010

We studied the weather forecast and decided that we had to get out fairly early because they said it would be raining by early afternoon. So, after breakfast, it was a quick drive up to the top end of Thirlmere and boots were put on at the little lay-by on the A591 near Bridge End Farm....

At this point, High Rigg was one of two un-climbed "Central Fells" in my list. Ignored for many years due to the lack of height, it was time to take a closer look.

On the Up

Sunny intervals light up the fellside. Early mist has risen and later rain has not arrived.

Young Oak?

What are these "berries" on the young oak?

Low Rigg

We decided not to go on to Low Rigg and Tewet Tarn as we were aware of the expected rain and we did not want to get our hair wet. So we descended to the youth centre and St.John's church, before taking the low level path back along St.John's in the Vale.

We popped in here for a little refreshment - see RRR later. We then followed the path along the flank of High Rigg and back to the car.

Parking Spot

Walkers: Karen and Me

Time taken: 3hr 30 mins over a distance of approx. 5miles, including brew time at the farm.

Route: Up over High Rigg from the south end and then back along the flank on the east side.

Weather and conditions: Sunny intervals for most of the time, cloudier towards the end. No rain.

Greetings Count: A few other walkers up early and seizing the day.

Richard's Refreshment Review: Tea and home-made scones at Low Bridge End Farm. Very good and friendly service is always welcome. This is a walker's cafe, don't take the car, most seating is outside, but there is a little "conservatory" with room for visitors on a wet day.
